Protecting yourself from today's threats (part 3)

June 30, 2016 • Security

Report suspicious telephone or e-mail communications by contacting the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) right away. This government agency collects information on financial scams and identity theft in Canada directly from the public. Contact the centre by phone at 1-888-495-8501 or visit the website at www.antifraudcentre.ca to report a scam or attempted scam online.

Victims of fraud are also encouraged to speak to their local police service by contacting a non-emergency provincial hotline.

  • Ontario Provincial Police: 1-888-310-1122
  • Quebec Provincial Police: 1-514-598-4141
  • RCMP (rest of Canada): 1-613-993-7267

If you believe that your banking or credit card information may have been fraudulently obtained, speak to your bank or credit card issuer. Often, their contact information can be found on the back of your bank and credit cards. You may also contact the credit bureaus Equifax at 1-800-465-7166 and TransUnion at 1-800-663-9980.

Wrap up

Staying informed and vigilant when it comes to protecting your personal and financial information may seem like common sense, as does forming day-to-day habits that reinforce your awareness of these scams, such as always understanding who you are dealing with whenever information is being requested. Many people in Canada, however, will fall victim to these scams without having any idea that they have been targeted.
